TCE is used particularly frequently in <strong>metalworking<\/strong>, <strong>plastics production<\/strong>, <strong>surface cleaning<\/strong> and the <strong>remediation of contaminated sites<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, despite its effectiveness as a <strong>solvent<\/strong>, trichloroethene poses considerable <strong>health risks<\/strong> &#8211; particularly due to the formation of toxic vapors at room temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-medium\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tce-carcinogenic-nerve-damaging-and-difficult-to-perceive\">TCE: Carcinogenic, nerve-damaging and difficult to perceive<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even at low concentrations, <strong>trichloroethene<\/strong> can be <strong>absorbed via the respiratory tract<\/strong> and has an irritating, anaesthetic and, with chronic exposure, <strong>carcinogenic<\/strong> effect. It also damages <strong>the central nervous system<\/strong>, <strong>liver<\/strong> and <strong>kidneys<\/strong> &#8211; and is suspected of <strong>altering genetic material<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Toxicological key figures (Germany):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AGW (occupational exposure limit value):<\/strong> 10 ppm (TRGS 900)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MAK value:<\/strong> 10 ppm (\u224855 mg\/m\u00b3)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Odor threshold:<\/strong> 20-30 ppm \u2192 <strong>Danger:<\/strong> perception often too late<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Long-term risks:<\/strong> Nerve damage, liver toxicity, <strong>cancer risk (IARC Group 1)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-medium\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Particularly treacherous:<\/strong> TCE is colorless and difficult to detect &#8211; it can accumulate unnoticed in poorly ventilated rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-medium\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fire-hazard-due-to-tce-vapors-explosion-risk-in-certain-environments\">Fire hazard due to TCE vapors &#8211; Explosion risk in certain environments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although trichloroethene is <strong>not self-igniting<\/strong> as a liquid, it can become flammable or even explosive in vapor-air mixtures.
