At low concentrations, it smells like rotten eggs &#8211; but this smell is not a reliable indicator: from around 100 ppm, H\u2082S numbs the sense of smell, causing a dangerous habituation effect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>H\u2082S is produced during biological decomposition processes, in <strong>sewage treatment plants<\/strong>, during <strong>oil and gas extraction<\/strong>, in the <strong>paper and pulp industry<\/strong> and in the chemical industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-medium\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Toxic and quickly fatal &#8211; H\u2082S blocks cell respiration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Hydrogen sulphide has a similar effect to hydrogen cyanide &#8211; it blocks oxygen transport in the cells. The result: respiratory paralysis and death within a few minutes at high concentrations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Toxicological guideline values &amp; symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>0.01-0.3 ppm<\/strong>: Odor threshold (not reliable)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>10 ppm<\/strong>: eye irritation, coughing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>100 ppm<\/strong>: loss of odor (feigns safety)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>300 ppm<\/strong>: respiratory arrest possible &#8211; acute danger to life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&gt;500 ppm<\/strong>: fatal after a few minutes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&gt;1,000 ppm<\/strong>: immediately fatal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Caution:<\/em> The smell of H\u2082S is not a reliable warning signal &#8211; professional detection is vital!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Explosive risk &#8211; H\u2082S forms highly explosive air mixtures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to its high toxicity, H\u2082S is also <strong>highly flammable<\/strong>. Even low concentrations in poorly ventilated rooms can produce an explosive mixture.
