Despite its industrial relevance, SO\u2082 poses a serious health and safety risk &#8211; especially in the event of uncontrolled release or unnoticed concentrations indoors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sulphur dioxide: Toxic and irritant even in small quantities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the smallest concentrations of SO\u2082 irritate the respiratory tract, eyes and mucous membranes. Respiratory patients, asthmatics, children and workers in highly exposed areas are particularly at risk. At higher concentrations, there is a risk of lung damage, edema or even life-threatening chemical burns.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Health-relevant threshold values for sulphur dioxide:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Odor threshold: <\/strong>0.3-1 ppm (often perceptible too late)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AGW (occupational exposure limit value, Germany): <\/strong>0.5 ppm (1.3 mg\/m\u00b3)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&gt;2 ppm: <\/strong>Irritation of eyes, throat and respiratory tract<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&gt;5-10 ppm<\/strong>: Risk of serious damage to health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&gt;50 ppm<\/strong>: acute danger to life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Particularly critical:<\/em> In humid breathing air, SO\u2082 reacts to form sulphurous acid, which additionally corrodes the lung tissue and significantly increases the toxic effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-non-explosive-but-chemically-aggressive-and-corrosive\">Non-explosive, but chemically aggressive and corrosive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sulphur dioxide is non-flammable and non-explosive, but is a highly reactive and highly corrosive gas. In combination with humidity or water, it forms acid rain, which massively attacks machines, pipelines and building materials.
