Despite its usefulness, phosgene is one of the most dangerous respiratory toxins and can be life-threatening even in very low concentrations &#8211; exposure often goes unnoticed for a long time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-medium\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dangerous-toxicity-even-low-concentrations-are-life-threatening\">Dangerous toxicity &#8211; even low concentrations are life-threatening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Phosgene damages and destroys lung tissue, with symptoms often appearing after a delay. The first signs, such as an irritating cough or shortness of breath, may only become noticeable hours later, when irreversible damage has already occurred. This means that the risk is often underestimated.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Important toxicological values at a glance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Odor threshold:<\/strong> approx. 0.5 ppm (only slightly perceptible)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AGW (occupational exposure limit value, Germany):<\/strong> 0.1 ppm (TRGS 900)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1-2 ppm<\/strong>: risk of severe lung damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>From 5 ppm<\/strong>: acute danger to life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Above 15 ppm<\/strong>: mostly fatal after short exposure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-medium\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Particularly critical: phosgene can be produced unintentionally, for example when chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene are heated in a humid environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-explosion-hazard-no-but-high-reactivity-and-decomposition-risks\">Explosion hazard? However, it can form highly reactive and corrosive compounds at high temperatures and in contact with water or organic substances.
