Despite its widespread use in the chemical industry, metal processing, semiconductor manufacturing and plastics production, HCl poses considerable risks to health and plant safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reliable detection of hydrogen chloride gas is therefore essential in all HCl-processing operations &#8211; for personal protection, process control and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hcl-strongly-irritating-and-toxic-even-small-amounts-are-dangerous\"><strong>HCl: Strongly irritating and toxic &#8211; even small amounts are dangerous<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Hydrogen chloride irritates <strong>the respiratory tract, skin and mucous membranes<\/strong> from a concentration of <strong>5 ppm<\/strong>. From <strong>50-100 ppm<\/strong>, severe <strong>chemical burns of the respiratory tract<\/strong>, <strong>lung damage<\/strong> and long-term damage to health can occur. Chronic exposure to HCl can cause <strong>irreversible tissue damage<\/strong> &#8211; especially with inadequate ventilation or lack of gas monitoring.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Possible health risks:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Irritation and inflammation of the respiratory tract<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cough, burning of the mucous membranes, shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toxic pulmonary edema with high exposure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic damage due to long-term exposure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-direct-explosion-hazard-but-high-reaction-potential\">No direct explosion hazard &#8211; but high reaction potential<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HCl is not flammable<\/strong>, but is <strong>chemically highly reactive<\/strong>. Particularly in combination with <strong>metals<\/strong>, <strong>alkalis<\/strong> or <strong>water<\/strong>, aggressive compounds are formed which can lead to <strong>corrosion<\/strong>, <strong>heat development<\/strong> or even <strong>pressure build-up<\/strong>.
