It is the main component of natural gas, an important component of biogas and an essential raw material in the chemical industry. Despite its many uses, methane is a highly flammable gas that can quickly become a significant source of danger in the event of a leak.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risk of explosion and fire due to methane<\/h5>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Methane is colorless and odorless. The well-known &#8220;gas odor&#8221; is caused by added odorants. In combination with air, methane forms highly flammable and explosive gas mixtures. Even low concentrations can trigger violent explosions in the presence of an ignition source.   <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>Safety-relevant properties of methane:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Explosion limit range:<\/strong> approx. 4.4 &#8211; 17 % by volume in air<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flash point:<\/strong> not defined (gas)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ignition temperature:<\/strong> approx. 595 \u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gas density:<\/strong> lighter than air, rises upwards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Methane spreads quickly and inconspicuously in the environment. An explosive gas-air mixture can form, particularly in poorly ventilated rooms.
