It is mainly used in the <strong>manufacture of plastics<\/strong>, in <strong>refineries<\/strong> and in the <strong>production of ethylene oxide<\/strong>. However, despite its broad industrial application, ethylene poses an enormous <strong>risk of explosion and fire<\/strong> &#8211; even in <strong>low concentrations<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bl-block-spacer\"><div class=\"is-style-small\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-explosion-hazard-from-ethylene-real-and-often-underestimated\"><strong>Explosion hazard from ethylene &#8211; real and often underestimated<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethylene is an <strong>unsaturated hydrocarbon (alkene)<\/strong> with extremely <strong>low ignition energy<\/strong>. A single spark or a hot surface is enough to ignite the gas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lower explosion limit (LEL):<\/strong> approx. <strong>2.7 % vol.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Upper explosion limit (UEL):<\/strong> approx. <strong>36% by volume<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Particularly critical: ethylene is <strong>colorless and odorless<\/strong>.
