Phosgene (COCl₂) – Highly toxic and insidious gas
Early warning systems save lives
Phosgene is a colorless, slightly pungent smelling gas that is mainly used in industry as an important intermediate in the production of plastics, dyes, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. Despite its usefulness, phosgene is one of the most dangerous respiratory toxins and can be life-threatening even in very low concentrations – exposure often goes unnoticed for a long time.
Dangerous toxicity – even low concentrations are life-threatening
Phosgene damages and destroys lung tissue, with symptoms often appearing after a delay. The first signs, such as an irritating cough or shortness of breath, may only become noticeable hours later, when irreversible damage has already occurred. This means that the risk is often underestimated.
Important toxicological values at a glance:
- Odor threshold: approx. 0.5 ppm (only slightly perceptible)
- AGW (occupational exposure limit value, Germany): 0.1 ppm (TRGS 900)
- 1-2 ppm: risk of severe lung damage
- From 5 ppm: acute danger to life
- Above 15 ppm: mostly fatal after short exposure
Particularly critical: phosgene can be produced unintentionally, for example when chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene are heated in a humid environment.
Explosion hazard? No – but high reactivity and decomposition risks
Phosgene is neither flammable nor explosive. However, it can form highly reactive and corrosive compounds at high temperatures and in contact with water or organic substances. It also decomposes into toxic carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) when exposed to heat.
Phosgene gas detectors – life-saving precision and safety
As phosgene can hardly be reliably detected by the human sense of smell, special gas warning devices are essential to effectively protect people and systems. Our phosgene detectors offer:
- Highly sensitive sensors from 0.01 ppm
- Reliable 24/7 monitoring in production facilities, laboratories and warehouses
- Acoustic and visual warning signals for early hazard detection
- Automatic control of ventilation, shut-off and emergency shut-off systems
- Portable devices for maintenance personnel and emergency teams
- Stationary measurement solutions for permanent indoor air monitoring
Working safely with one of the most dangerous industrial gases
Whether chemical production, plastics manufacturing, the paint industry or research – our gas detectors enable reliable monitoring of phosgene and ensure maximum safety in demanding areas of application.
