Hexane (C₆H₁₄)
Invisible danger from a highly flammable gas
Hexane, especially n-hexane, is a highly volatile hydrocarbon gas that is used in numerous industrial processes – for example in solvent technology, paint production or food processing. As useful as this substance is, it can be dangerous in the event of a leak.
Explosion and fire hazard due to hexane
n-Hexane is highly flammable and forms an explosive gas mixture with air even at room temperature. The most important hazards at a glance:
- Explosion limit range: approx. 1.1 % by volume (LEL) to 7.5 % by volume (LEL) in air
- Ignition temperature: approx. 225 °C
- Flash point: approx. -22 °C
- Density (gaseous): heavier than air – it collects near the ground
Even small quantities in the air are enough to trigger an explosion or uncontrolled fires under certain conditions – for example through sparks, hot surfaces or static discharge.
Why gas detectors are essential for hexane
Hexane is colorless and odorless in low concentrations – a dangerous combination. Without suitable gas detectors, a leak often goes unnoticed until it is too late. Our gas detectors offer:
- Early detection well below the lower explosion limit (LEL)
- Reliable measurement even in areas with high requirements (e.g. Ex zones)
- Simple integration into existing security systems
- With precise sensor technology, our systems protect employees, systems and the environment – before it becomes dangerous.
Our recommendation:
Safety starts with reliable gas warning technology
Hexane is a versatile but dangerous substance. Its rapid evaporation, high flammability and invisible spread make the use of gas detectors mandatory – especially in sensitive areas.
With modern, precise gas sensors, the danger can be controlled – before people or equipment are harmed.
The following gas sensors and systems from Bieler+Lang can detect hexane vapors
We will be happy to advise you on the selection of suitable detectors and the corresponding evaluation devices for your individual application.
