Hydrogen chloride (HCl) is a colorless, pungent-smelling gas that immediately reacts with moisture to form a corrosive hydrochloric acid aerosol. Despite its widespread use in the chemical industry, metal processing, semiconductor manufacturing and plastics production, HCl poses considerable risks to health and plant safety.

HCl: Strongly irritating and toxic – even small amounts are dangerous
Hydrogen chloride irritates the respiratory tract, skin and mucous membranes from a concentration of 5 ppm. From 50-100 ppm, severe chemical burns of the respiratory tract, lung damage and long-term damage to health can occur. Chronic exposure to HCl can cause irreversible tissue damage – especially with inadequate ventilation or lack of gas monitoring.

- Toxic pulmonary edema with high exposure

No direct explosion hazard – but high reaction potential
HCl is not flammable, but is chemically highly reactive. Particularly in combination with metals, alkalis or water, aggressive compounds are formed which can lead to corrosion, heat development or even pressure build-up. There is therefore an indirect risk of reactions in production plants, particularly in the event of leaks or uncontrolled release.
