Hydrogen chloride (HCl) – Corrosive, toxic and invisible

Precise gas measurement protects people, machines and the environment

Hydrogen chloride (HCl) is a colorless, pungent-smelling gas that immediately reacts with moisture to form a corrosive hydrochloric acid aerosol. Despite its widespread use in the chemical industry, metal processing, semiconductor manufacturing and plastics production, HCl poses considerable risks to health and plant safety.

Reliable detection of hydrogen chloride gas is therefore essential in all HCl-processing operations – for personal protection, process control and infrastructure.

HCl: Strongly irritating and toxic – even small amounts are dangerous

Hydrogen chloride irritates the respiratory tract, skin and mucous membranes from a concentration of 5 ppm. From 50-100 ppm, severe chemical burns of the respiratory tract, lung damage and long-term damage to health can occur. Chronic exposure to HCl can cause irreversible tissue damage – especially with inadequate ventilation or lack of gas monitoring.

Possible health risks:

  • Irritation and inflammation of the respiratory tract
  • Cough, burning of the mucous membranes, shortness of breath
  • Toxic pulmonary edema with high exposure
  • Chronic damage due to long-term exposure

No direct explosion hazard – but high reaction potential

HCl is not flammable, but is chemically highly reactive. Particularly in combination with metals, alkalis or water, aggressive compounds are formed which can lead to corrosion, heat development or even pressure build-up. There is therefore an indirect risk of reactions in production plants, particularly in the event of leaks or uncontrolled release.

Gas detectors for HCl – early warning system for invisible risks

As hydrogen chloride is colorless and often difficult to detect, the sense of smell offers no reliable protection. Only precise gas detection technology can reliably detect even the smallest quantities. Our HCl gas detectors have been specially developed for industrial requirements and provide protection through rapid detection and automated warning mechanisms.

Your advantages with our HCl detection systems:

  • Sensitive sensor technology: Detection from a few ppm
  • Fast response times for leaks and emissions
  • Audible & visual alarms for immediate danger notification
  • Direct connection to ventilation systems, shut-off valves and emergency shut-offs
  • Portable and stationary versions – ideal for mobile applications and permanently installed monitoring

Areas of application for our HCl gas detectors:

  • Chemical production & laboratory environments
  • Metal finishing & electroplating
  • Semiconductor industry & clean rooms
  • Plastics and fertilizer production
  • Storage and hazardous materials rooms
