Formaldehyde (CH₂O) – toxic, flammable, risky

Gas detectors for maximum safety

Formaldehyde (CH₂O) is an indispensable raw material in numerous branches of industry – from plastics processing and furniture manufacturing to the textile and resin industries. However, despite its industrial relevance, formaldehyde is a highly hazardous gas:

  • Toxic and irritant
  • Inflammable and explosis under certain conditions
  • Carcinogenic according to CLP and REACH regulation
Formaldehyde: Flammable and explosive – an underestimated danger

Formaldehyde is usually a colorless gas with a pungent odor that can easily ignite at high temperatures or with poor ventilation. In the air, it forms an explosive mixture – with the following limit values:

  • Lower explosion limit (LEL): approx. 7 % by volume
  • Upper explosion limit (UEL): approx. 73% by volume

Although these values are relatively high, a critical state can quickly arise in production or storage rooms with large quantities of formaldehyde – especially if additional substances or high temperatures are added.

Dual threat: toxicity + fire hazard

The real danger often comes from chronic or acute toxicity:
Formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory tract and cause damage to health from as little as 0.1 ppm. Continuous monitoring for toxic AND flammable concentrations is therefore essential.

Gas detectors for formaldehyde – precision for maximum safety

Our formaldehyde gas detectors detect even the lowest concentrations from < 0 .05 ppm – for optimum health protection in the workplace and effective explosion prevention. Depending on the application, we offer

  • Stationary systems for fixed installation
  • Multiple sensors for the detection of HCHO + VOCs + other hazardous substances

Typical areas of application for our gas detectors for formaldehyde:

  • Wood processing & chipboard production
  • Textile and leather industry
  • Laboratories, testing facilities, universities
  • Chemical & resin production (e.g.e.g. phenolic resins, melamine)
  • Medical areas (pathology, histology, dissection rooms)

Your benefits with our HCHO warning systems:

  • Early warning from as little as <0.05 ppm
  • Reliable detection of flammable & toxic concentrations
  • Intelligent sensor technology & long-term stability
  • Simple integration into existing security infrastructure (e.g.E.G. BMS, SCADA)
  • Robust devices for industrial requirements & ATEX zones
