Formaldehyde (CH₂O) – Invisible danger in air and materials

Precise gas measurement protects life and health

Formaldehyde is a colorless, pungent-smelling gas that is used in many industries such as plastics processing, the textile industry, wood processing, construction chemicals and medical disinfection. Formaldehyde can also be released in everyday products such as chipboard, furniture and paints. Despite its widespread use, formaldehyde is one of the most harmful substances – even in low concentrations.

Toxic and carcinogenic – danger even at the lowest formaldehyde concentrations

Formaldehyde irritates the eyes, skin and respiratory tract and can cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea and inflammation of the mucous membranes. Chronic or repeated exposure increases the risk of respiratory diseases and cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as “carcinogenic to humans” (Group 1).

Important limit values:

  • Irritation occurs from as little as 0.1 ppm
  • The occupational exposure limit value (OEL) is only 0.3 ppm
  • In sensitive areas such as schools, laboratories or medical technology, even lower guide values often apply

Explosion hazard – Highly flammable and explosive mixtures

Formaldehyde is highly flammable and forms explosive mixtures with air in higher concentrations. These can easily ignite when exposed to ignition sources such as sparks or heat. The ignition limit is between approx. 7 and 73% by volume, the flash point is -19 °C. There is therefore a risk of explosion, particularly in poorly ventilated rooms or in the event of leaks.

Gas detectors for formaldehyde – Reliable protection against invisible danger

As formaldehyde is colorless and odorless, gas detectors are essential for the early detection of dangerous concentrations. Our gas detection systems offer:

  • Highly sensitive sensors from a few ppb (parts per billion)
  • Reliable monitoring of workplace and indoor air limit values
  • Audible and visual alarms when exceeded
  • Seamless integration into HVAC, ventilation and security systems
  • Stationary and portable devices for production, laboratories and public facilities

Safety begins with precise formaldehyde measurement

Protect employees, systems and processes with state-of-the-art formaldehyde gas detection. Our solutions convince through:

  • High measuring accuracy
  • Long-term stable sensors
  • Compatibility with existing security networks
The following gas sensors and systems from Bieler+Lang can detect formaldehyde
