Bieler+Lang : Toxische Gase

Hydrogen fluoride (HF) – Highly toxic, highly corrosive gas

Precise detection for reliable protection

Hydrogen fluoride is a colorless, pungent smelling gas with extremely high chemical reactivity. It is used in numerous branches of industry such as semiconductor technology, petrochemistry, glass etching, metal finishing and in the production of refrigerants and fluorine compounds. Despite its versatile use, HF is one of the most dangerous gases with a strong toxic and corrosive effect – even in very low concentrations.

Toxic and corrosive risk – Dangerous even from the smallest quantities

HF causes local burns to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract and can penetrate deep into the tissue. It accumulates in body fluids and has a systemic toxic effect. The first irritations occur from as little as 3 ppm, and severe burns and life-threatening consequences can occur from 30 ppm. Particularly treacherous: HF burns are often painless and are therefore frequently underestimated.

The serious health consequences include

  • Shortness of breath and pulmonary edema
  • Life-threatening calcium and magnesium depletion in the blood
  • Deep tissue damage and necrosis
  • Systemic poisoning with long-term consequences

No explosion risk – but extremely reactive and corrosive

Hydrogen fluoride is neither flammable nor explosive, but highly reactive and highly corrosive. It reacts violently with water, metals, alkali and glass, producing dangerous gases or heat. Even the smallest leaks can cause serious damage to technical systems and acutely endanger people.

Gas detectors for hydrogen fluoride (HF) – Effective protection through reliable gas measurement

As HF is colorless and odorless, technical monitoring is essential. Our HF gas detectors offer:

  • Early warning for concentrations from a few ppm
  • Fast response times in the event of leaks or uncontrolled release
  • Sensors that detect toxic and corrosive gases
  • Integration into alarm systems and security networks
  • Stationary and mobile devices for industry, laboratories and hazardous areas
