Ethylene (C₂H₄) – highly explosive and highly flammable
Safety through reliable gas warning technology
Ethylene (C₂H₄) is one of the most important raw materials in the chemical and petrochemical industry. It is mainly used in the manufacture of plastics, in refineries and in the production of ethylene oxide. However, despite its broad industrial application, ethylene poses an enormous risk of explosion and fire – even in low concentrations.
Explosion hazard from ethylene – real and often underestimated
Ethylene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon (alkene) with extremely low ignition energy. A single spark or a hot surface is enough to ignite the gas.
- Lower explosion limit (LEL): approx. 2.7 % vol.
- Upper explosion limit (UEL): approx. 36% by volume
Particularly critical: ethylene is colorless and odorless. It can accumulate unnoticed in closed rooms, tank farms or technical facilities – and thus become an invisible danger.
Gas detectors for ethylene: Early detection saves lives
Our gas detection systems for ethylene reliably detect even the lowest gas concentrations and trigger an alarm in good time – long before a dangerous explosion zone is reached. This makes them a central component of any operational safety strategy in which ethylene is used, processed or transported.
Typical areas of application for our ethylene gas detectors:
- Chemical and petrochemical plants
- Research laboratories & pilot plants
- Tank farms & loading facilities
- Plastics production and processing
- Plants with ethylene oxide or ethanol processing
Your advantages at a glance:
- Early warning of dangerous ethylene concentrations
- Maintenance-friendly design with durable sensor technology
- Secure integration into existing alarm and control systems (e.g. SCADA, BMS)
- Precise measurement – even in fluctuating ambient conditions
- Optional multi-gas operation for combined detection (e.g. methane, hydrogen, ammonia)
Reliable ethylene detection is the key to greater safety
Ethylene is part of the industrial present – but its full potential can only be safely exploited with professional gas monitoring. Our systems protect employees, systems and production processes effectively and in compliance with standards.
