Bieler+Lang : Toxische Gase

Ozone (O₃) – Highly reactive irritant gas with strong oxidizing power

Invisible danger, reliable protection

Ozone is a triatomic oxygen molecule (O₃) and is one of the most reactive gases of all. It is often produced artificially and used in areas such as disinfection, odor removal, sewage treatment plants, drinking water treatment, the food industry, printing plants and laboratories. Despite its wide range of applications, ozone is very harmful to health in high concentrations and is toxic even in small quantities.

Health risks of ozone – irritant gas with high toxicity from low concentrations

Ozone is particularly irritating to the respiratory tract, eyes and mucous membranes. It can damage the lungs, cause inflammation, trigger coughing and shortness of breath and trigger chronic lung diseases with prolonged exposure. Even low concentrations of ozone lead to noticeable discomfort and health problems.

Important limit values and their effects at a glance:

  • From 0.05 ppm (approx. 0.1 mg/m³): Irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract
  • AGW (occupational exposure limit value, Germany): 0.1 ppm (8 hours)
  • From 0.3 ppm: Significant health hazard
  • From 1 ppm: Acute risk of poisoning with symptoms such as vomiting, shortness of breath and pulmonary edema

As ozone is colorless, gaseous and barely perceptible at room temperature, reliable technical monitoring is essential.

Is ozone explosive? – No, but highly reactive and oxidizing

Ozone is not flammable, but acts as a strong oxidizing agent and can promote or intensify reactions with flammable substances (solvents, oils, organic materials). In combination with flammable gases or vapors, the risk of fire and explosion increases considerably – especially in closed rooms or air treatment systems.

Ozone gas detectors – Indispensable protection through continuous real-time monitoring

As ozone is not directly visible to humans, gas detectors are essential for work areas exposed to ozone. Our ozone Gas Detectors offer:

  • Early alarm for critical ozone values from 0.01 ppm
  • Precise real-time monitoring, stationary and mobile
  • Audible and visual warning signals when limit values are exceeded
  • Easy integration into ventilation, shutdown and emergency management systems
  • Compact and robust solutions for laboratories, halls, waterworks and industrial plants

Precise ozone monitoring – innovative sensor technology for the highest safety requirements

Our gas detectors for ozone enable you to work safely with one of the most reactive industrial gases. Benefit from:

  • Highly sensitive measurement from just a few ppb (parts per billion)
  • Robust devices, ideal for demanding industrial environments
  • Compatibility with control systems, data loggers and building management systems (BMS)
  • Long-term stability and minimal maintenance
The following gas sensors and systems from Bieler+Lang can detect ozone

We will be happy to advise you on the selection of suitable detectors and the corresponding evaluation devices for your individual application.
