Chlorine gas (Cl₂) is a yellow-green, pungent-smelling gas that is indispensable in numerous industrial applications – from water treatment and chemical synthesis to plastics production. Despite its usefulness, chlorine is a highly toxic and reactive gas that can cause serious health risks even in small quantities.
Toxicity of chlorine – corrosive, irritant, life-threatening
Chlorine is highly irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Concentrations as low as 0.5 ppm can cause initial symptoms such as coughing, burning and watery eyes. Acute respiratory distress occurs from 30 ppm – at 400 ppm there is an acute danger to life. Chlorine destroys lung tissue and can cause toxic pulmonary edema, the effects of which are often delayed but can be fatal.
Typical symptoms of chlorine poisoning:
- Irritation of the respiratory tract, coughing irritation
- Shortness of breath, tightness in the chest
- Vomiting, dizziness
- Fatal pulmonary edema with high exposure
Reactivity – Chlorine is not flammable, but dangerously unstable
Chlorine itself is not flammable, but reacts extremely aggressively with a variety of substances. In combination with hydrogen, ammonia, hydrocarbons or metal dusts, explosive reactions or toxic by-products can occur. In technical systems with sensitive processes, this represents a considerable safety risk.
